Rhode Island is the smallest state in size and the second most densely populated state in the United States. Over half of the state’s 152,000 preK–12 students attend schools in large suburban areas and almost a third attend schools in urban areas. REL-NEI is working closely with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) to provide research support for a broad range of initiatives, including the building of a robust data system to inform decision-making. REL-NEI researchers have presented research findings on data-driven decision-making and large-scale assessment data among English language learners (ELLs) to state- and district-level administrators and educators. In addition, REL-NEI is working to provide state legislators and state education leaders with current research on high school dropout prevention programs and education policies that address student mobility—topics of high priority and relevance within the state.
