Policy Challenges Webinar: Bridging Research and Practice: Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices

December 2009

In this webinar co-hosted with the New England Comprehensive Center, Dr. Michael Kamil at Stanford University presented five evidence-based recommendations for improving adolescent literacy from an Institute of Education Sciences Practice Guide. In addition, three practitioner panelists from different Northeast states linked the recommendations to their own work helping struggling adolescent readers. Webinar archive available.

Policy Challenges Webinar: Bridging Research and Practice: Six Recommendations to Address Dropout Prevention

In this webinar, Dr. Russell Rumberger, Professor of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, presented six evidence-based recommendations for reducing dropout rates from the Institute of Education Sciences Practice Guide on Dropout Prevention. Following Dr. Rumberger’s presentation, a small panel of discussants—including a district superintendent, a REL-NEI researcher, and a state-level education administrator—described their own work on dropout prevention, linking it to the Practice Guide recommendations. Policy Challenges Conference: Bridging Research and Practice: Using Research to Inform Mathematics Policy & Practice in Maine: A Focus on Algebra Recommendations in the National Mathematics Advisory Panel Report

This conference in Augusta, Maine, focused on the final report of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, “Foundations for Success.” Co-author Dr. Francis “Skip” Fennell, Professor of Education at McDaniel College, presented findings and recommendations from the report to math teachers, instruction specialists, and policymakers from across Maine. Participants learned how the report and other research can be used by Maine districts and schools to inform decisions. Video available.

Region 1 Parent Centers Annual Conference: Addressing Behavior in the Elementary School Classroom

June 2009

At the 2009 annual conference of the Region 1 Parent Centers in Providence, Rhode Island, REL-NEI sponsored a keynote address that highlighted the Institute of Education Sciences Practice Guide, “Reducing Behavior Problems in the Elementary School Classroom.” Dr. Krista Kutash of the University of South Florida, one of the primary authors, presented the Practice Guide and talked about the research behind its recommendations to staff members at federally funded parent centers in New England, New York, and New Jersey. Policy Challenges Conference: Bridging Research and Practice: State Investments in Early Childhood Education Programs
May 2009
This conference in Augusta, Maine, brought together a nationally recognized researcher on early childhood education (ECE), Dr. Christine Ross, with Maine state legislators, education leaders, and other policymakers. A senior economist at Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., Dr. Ross presented ECE research conducted by the What Works Clearinghouse, at the Institute of Education Sciences, as well as research on the impacts of a variety of early childhood programs, including Head Start, Early Head Start, and state pre-K programs.

In this webinar, Dr. Jay Smink, Director of the National Dropout Prevention Center/Network at Clemson University, discussed evidence-based recommendations and strategies for lowering dropout rates with educators and policymakers in New Hampshire, which has set a goal to reduce its high school dropout rate to zero by 2012.

February 2009
Co-hosted by REL-NEI and the New England Comprehensive Center, this one-day conference in Simsbury, Connecticut, highlighted the Institute of Education Sciences Practice Guide, “Effective Literacy and English Language Instruction for English Learners in the Elementary Grades.” Co-author Dr. Robin Scarcella, Director of Academic English and ESL at the University of California-Irvine, presented the Practice Guide’s five research-based recommendations to participants from the Connecticut State Department of Education and to teams of ELL practitioners from Connecticut school districts.
