OVERVIEW
Student achievement in mathematics in middle and high school is a national and regional concern. To help strengthen students’ mathematics achievement, national- and state-level policymakers and education advocates have promoted offering algebra to students in middle school. REL NEI is currently conducting a three-year study, in primarily rural Maine and Vermont schools, to examine how improving access to Algebra I to eighth-graders by providing them with an online course benefits student math achievement and course-taking patterns.

The webinar will provide an overview of the study and the design of the online algebra course. The moderator will then facilitate a discussion on regional needs and what practitioners can expect to learn at the conclusion of this rigorous research study. This webinar will serve to provide background for future discussions related to algebra readiness, online course offerings, and the logistics of conducting rigorous research in real schools and classrooms.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
National, state and local policymakers; state education leaders; district and school administrators; representatives of professional associations and unions; teachers; and parents interested in learning more about this study and participating in a conversation about how rigorous research can inform our understanding important educational issues.

REL-NEI Webinars provide an interactive forum for state education agencies, superintendents, principals, district level specialists, association heads, state legislatures, teachers unions, and parent associations seeking applied education research to make policy and practice decisions leading to improved student achievement and reduced performance gaps. These sessions not only present findings but place a special emphasis on connecting applied education research to the work of field practitioners.
