FEATURED SPEAKER
Dr. Francis “Skip” Fennell is a coauthor of Foundations for Success: The Final Report of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel. Dr. Fennell is chair of the Panel’s Task Group on Conceptual Knowledge and Skills. He is a mathematics educator and has experience as a classroom teacher, principal, and supervisor of instruction. He is currently Professor of Education at McDaniel College and a past President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

OVERVIEW

This event focuses on the final report of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, Foundations for Success, intended as a platform of action to improve the mathematics achievement of all students in the United States. The report emphasizes readiness for and success in algebra. The 24 expert panelists reviewed more than 16,000 research studies and condensed the information to 45 findings and recommendations. These findings and recommendations include information on instructional practices, curriculum materials and content, assessment, and priorities for future research.

Participants will learn about the National Mathematics Advisory Panel report and how this report and other research can be used by Maine districts and schools to inform decisions. Discussions and materials will focus on policy and practice implications of the report findings and recommendations for Maine. The event will include time to ask Dr. Fennell questions and for participant roundtable discussions.
