The Regional Educational Laboratories are active agents in identifying and implementing research initiatives—small and large—to address issues of state, regional, and national concern. In this webinar, REL Northeast and Islands’s director Jill Weber provided an overview of REL-NEI’s research services and then talked with selected stakeholders from around the region about their work with the REL. Attendees heard from the legislative research director of the Rhode Island General Assembly about her use of the REL-NEI Reference Desk and a national expert on dropout prevention to boost legislators’ understanding as they review state dropout policy. From New York State, the director of the Mid-Hudson Bilingual/ESL Technical Assistance Center (BETAC) spoke about a May event his organization and REL-NEI co-hosted around a report on identifying learning disabilities in English learners. Maine DOE’s Science & Technology Specialist also described the REL-NEI’s technical assistance support for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) in Maine. Attendees were invited to ask questions about REL services and translating research into policy and practice, as well as describe their own needs for research support.
