The Providence Journal reported on October 25th that three philanthropic foundations will provide the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) with $245,000 to improve the state’s chance of receiving federal Race to the Top education funds. RIDE will use the grant money to hire national experts to help state education staff prepare a strategy for education reform. The three donor organizations are The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation ($95,000), Nellie Mae Education Foundation ($75,000), and The Rhode Island Foundation ($75,000).

On October 23rd, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education posted an updated allocation of stimulus funds to local school districts.

On October 19th, the White House Domestic Policy Council, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education, issued a report titled, “Educational Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.” Preliminary data indicate that states will credit the Recovery Act with creating and saving at least 250,000 education jobs nationwide.
